Under the patronage of Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani, the activities of the ninth international “Iraq Energy” exhibition and conference were launched yesterday, Monday, which will be held for the period from 12 to 14 February, with the participation of 180 local and international companies specialized in energy affairs to advance the energy situation in Iraq and the transition to renewable energy.
The Minister of Electricity, Engineer Ziad Ali Fadel, said in a speech during the conference attended by “Al-Sabah”: “The Iraqi government seeks to build sustainable and reliable energy systems that take into account appropriate environmental standards,” noting that “the most important projects of the new ministry include smart transformation in the electrical system and the application of networks.” And smart meters and electronic payment systems for electricity usage bills.”
He added, "The Ministry succeeded in achieving the highest production of electrical energy in its history last summer, reaching (26,050) megawatts," pointing out that "our technical teams are making great efforts to increase production during next summer if the required fuel supply is stabilized."
Fadel stated, “The Ministry seeks, through its plans and projects within the government curriculum, to raise the rates of electric energy production by adding new production units, and to raise the efficiency of gas generation plants by switching from simple cycle to combined cycle, in addition to improving the performance efficiency of gas plants by adding cooling systems and rehabilitation work.” And long-term maintenance, in addition to introducing renewable energy into the energy production mix.”
For his part, Oil Minister Hayan Abdul Ghani said: “This government, despite its short life, has achieved many achievements in oil and gas investment, starting with activating the fifth licensing rounds within the petroleum licensing rounds, which were suspended throughout the last period before the formation of this government.” Pointing out that “the government gave priority to signing and activating these contracts because of their importance in investing in gas and using it to generate electrical energy by developing a plan to stop burning gas in various oil fields, in addition to concluding many contracts and activating agreements in this field, with a focus on using Clean and renewable energy.”
He added, "The government has given great attention to the development of the electrical system, leading to self-sufficiency by allocating the necessary budget to implement many projects in this regard, starting with approving the implementation of combined cycles and making the most of gas and liquid fuel energy, increasing the efficiency of stations, to developing distribution organizations and treating power points." Weakness in order to cover all requirements for the system and search for renewable sources to activate electrical energy in line with the global trend to use alternative energy and reduce thermal emissions.”
Abdul-Ghani reviewed a group of strategic projects that the Ministry of Oil has implemented or is planning to implement within the vision of transitioning towards clean and renewable energy in accordance with international standards by reducing emissions so that the transition will be a source of revitalization of the Iraqi economy.
In addition, the head of General Electric in Iraq, Rashid Al-Janabi, praised the sponsorship of the government of Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani, which was an incentive and motivation to sign an agreement in February of last year with the Ministry of Electricity.
Al-Janabi added, in an interview with “Al-Sabah,” that “this agreement was a starting point for the company’s tireless work in the energy sector in Iraq, by rehabilitating and raising the efficiency of the production and turbine units of the Ministry of Electricity, in addition to implementing and continuing work in several secondary stations with voltages of 132 and 400 KV in different regions.” From Iraq, including Diwaniyah, Hindiyah, and Al-Sadr,” he stressed, “developing a road map that integrates with the ministry’s plan to secure electrical energy in Iraq at the peak of summer in the long term to support economic development in Iraq.”
