Baghdad/Al-Masala Al-Hadath: The visit of the Iraqi Prime Minister, Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani, to Washington aroused great interest in Iraqi-American relations and their future. This meeting is considered the beginning of a new phase in relations between the two countries, and it carries many challenges and hopes.
The visit comes in a sensitive and delicate context in terms of Iraqi-American bilateral relations, and also coincides with complex regional circumstances. Al-Sudani aims through the visit to strengthen relations with the United States and reach new agreements in line with the Iraqi government’s program, which focuses mainly on economic and financial reforms and strengthening economic partnerships with countries of the world.
Among the questions raised about this visit is the joint role of Iraq and the United States in calming the situation and preventing the escalation of conflicts in the region. However, the Iraqi alliance with Iran raises questions about its compatibility with Iraq's move toward partnership with the United States.
The Prime Minister announced that he will meet with the US Secretaries of State, Defense, and Treasury, in addition to the National Security Advisor, representatives of the US Chamber of Commerce, and senior officials in oil and industrial companies. This indicates the extent of the efforts made by the Sudanese to strengthen economic and trade relations between the two countries.
Iraq and the United States have strong relations and ties, and the principles of these relations were established in the strategic framework agreement that was signed between the two countries in 2008 and was approved by the Iraqi Council of Representatives.
From the American side, major companies need security guarantees in Iraq for their investments and businesses there. Can the Sudanese provide these guarantees and convince American companies to invest more in the country?
Al-Sudani faces a major challenge regarding the issue of the American presence in Iraq and the economic sanctions imposed on the country as a result of the relationship with Iran, in addition to other security and political challenges that he faces.
It is clear that the visit of the Iraqi Prime Minister to Washington inaugurates a new phase in Iraqi-American relations. However, major challenges will remain for Sudanese as he seeks to enhance economic and security stability in Iraq, and achieve a balance between the relationship with the United States and the alliance with Iran.
Despite the great challenges, this visit reflects Iraq's will to strengthen its relationship with the United States and achieve its national interests. This requires mutual commitment from both parties, directing efforts towards constructive cooperation and seeking stability in the region.
In the long term, this visit may be the beginning of strengthening economic cooperation between Iraq and the United States and enhancing investments and trade between the two countries. However, the existing challenges must be dealt with cautiously and the required balance must be achieved in Iraq's foreign relations.
In general, the visit of the Iraqi Prime Minister to Washington is considered an important step in developing Iraqi-American relations and enhancing cooperation between the two countries. However, existing challenges and joint action must be taken into account to achieve stability and development in Iraq and the region in general.
