Experts praise government support for higher education

Experts in the field of academic education praised the progress that Iraqi universities are currently witnessing, indicating that what has been achieved confirms the success of the government’s vision and its supportive approach to achieving comprehensive quality in higher education. This coincides with Iraqi universities being ranked first in the Arab world and seventh in the world in the “Times” classification for sustainable development. .
The head of the Iraqi Academics Syndicate, Dr. Ali Masir Yassin, said in an interview with “Al-Sabah”: “The effective strategy of the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research has proven that Iraqi higher education is capable of competing globally, which has strengthened Iraq’s position on the international arena to rank first in the Arab world and seventh in the world in The Times Sustainable Development Classification, in terms of the number of universities participating in the 2024 edition, which witnessed the competition of 2,152 universities from 125 countries.
He stated, "The Iraqi Academics Syndicate seeks to provide full support for the efforts of the government and the Ministry of Higher Education to raise the level of education, and its commitment to enhancing the role of academics and activating their active participation in developing educational and research programs, to ensure achieving high levels of quality and innovation," stressing that "the Syndicate will continue cooperation." “With the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research to achieve an advanced and comprehensive educational vision, in line with global challenges and requirements, which confirms Iraq’s leadership in the field of higher education.”
The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research had announced earlier that Iraqi universities had achieved distinction in the number of universities participating in the “Times” classification for sustainable development, and came first in the Arab world and seventh in the world.
For his part, the Dean of the College of Basic Education, Dr. Qusay Abdel Abbas Hassan, said in an interview with “Al-Sabah” that “Iraq’s obtaining first place in the Arab world and seventh in the world in the (Times) Sustainable Development classification is nothing but evidence of the progress of educational and pedagogical institutions with their quality.” Educational and university performance, and providing an educational environment that meets students’ aspirations and sustainable development.”
Noting, "the concerted efforts of educational and pedagogical institutions, represented by the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Naeem Al-Aboudi, and the selection of a team of university leaders that contributed to Iraq's scientific progress at the Arab and international levels."
The political analyst and academic professor, Dr. Saif Al-Saadi, said in an interview with “Al-Sabah”: “The Iraqi government represented by Prime Minister Muhammad Shia’a Al-Sudani presented a curriculum that was voted on in the House of Representatives based on Article 76 Fourth of the Constitution, and the curriculum included a number of topics related to... administration of the country and how to improve many issues, including the education sector, as well as the presence of an exceptional effort by the government of Muhammad Shia al-Sudani and by the Minister of Higher Education to advance the reality of education, especially with regard to the issue of raising the level of education and contributing to the progress of Iraq in terms of education, classification and comprehensive quality through Providing sound research and scientific innovations, participating in conferences held in the country that contributed to raising the name of Iraq, and raising the level of education to be in the highest ranks similar to the developed Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the Emirates, Egypt, and many developed countries.”
He explained, "Iraq has made significant progress in the level of classification of Iraqi universities on global indicators, and according to standards followed by the global system in order to classify countries at the level of university education and what they offer, whether at the level of master's theses and doctoral dissertations, and the publication of world-class research in (Scopes) magazine and others." "One of the magazines that can contribute to the advancement of Iraqi universities."
Al-Saadi said, “What has been achieved confirms the success of the government’s vision and its supportive approach to achieving comprehensive quality in higher education, openness to advanced educational systems in the world’s universities, and developing the level of performance in line with the goals of sustainable development.”
