Democratic Party: The Sunni blocs must decide their candidate for the presidency of Parliament

The Kurdistan Democratic Party bloc stressed the necessity of deciding the candidate for the position of Speaker of the Council before the end of the legislative recess and the start of the sessions.
The bloc member, Majid Shankali, explained that “most of the political blocs agree to proceed with the file after the legislative recess has passed, as the Speaker of the House of Representatives must be chosen.”
Shankali added, in an interview with “Al-Sabah,” that “the position is one of the entitlements of the Sunni component, and if this component unites, it will make things easier for the other political blocs, but there is still disagreement regarding the position and the nomination of the speaker of the House of Representatives,” explaining that “there are calls for the blocs to sit.” Sunnis will come together in intensive dialogue sessions to reach an agreement, until the council sessions are held after the holiday, which will end shortly after.”
The representative continued by saying, “Changing the internal system of the House of Representatives requires a political agreement, and it is a matter that is subject to negotiations. It is not within the powers of the members of the House of Representatives, and it is exclusively within the agreement of the leaders of the political blocs.”
The majority of the political blocs are seeking to put pressure to choose a speaker for Parliament, and to resolve a difficult and arduous stage of negotiations, as the elections did not succeed in agreeing on the next person to assume the presidency of the legislative authority in the country, after the Federal Court’s decision to terminate the membership of former President Muhammad al-Halbousi on November 14, 2023.
