The Integrity Commission announced that it had received one of the most prominent defendants in the theft of tax deposits (the theft of the century), praising the “cooperation of the federal and regional interior ministers.”
In March 2023, the Iraqi judiciary issued arrest warrants against four senior officials in the previous government headed by Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, on charges of “facilitating the seizure” of $2.5 billion in public funds in one of the largest financial corruption scandals in the country.
This case, which became known as the “theft of the century,” was revealed in October 2022 and sparked intense popular anger and resentment in Iraq, and involved former officials and prominent businessmen.
At least $2.5 billion was seized between September 2021 and August 2022 through 247 checks cashed by five companies, and then the money was withdrawn in cash from the accounts of these companies, most of whose owners have fled the country.
