The official spokesman for the Ministry of Transport, Maitham Al-Safi, confirmed on Tuesday that the project to rehabilitate and expand Baghdad International Airport will start next month and will include 12 projects that will be implemented according to international specifications.
Al-Safi said in a televised interview followed by "Al-Eqtisad News" that next month will witness the implementation of 12 projects that include construction, technical and engineering works, including completing the procedures for sorting and transferring the ownership of Abbas Ibn Firnas Square from the Baghdad Municipality to the Ministry of Transport and completely rehabilitating the square, as it will be a civilized facade befitting the name of the airport for departing and arriving passengers. This square will contain many entertainment centers as well as sales and purchase centers.
He added that the project will be implemented by 20 companies according to the latest international specifications within two long-term and short-term plans that are being worked on through developing and rehabilitating the airport, within the investment portfolio prepared by the International Finance Corporation through investment and partnership with the private sector to increase the airport's capacity to about 9 million passengers annually by expanding the airport, adding new buildings for passengers, and work will be according to the latest international specifications and standards.
He pointed out that these projects will be completed by mid-2025, and a financial amount estimated at 40 billion dinars has been allocated to rehabilitate the airport.
