A member of the Industry, Trade and Economy Committee in the Iraqi Council of Representatives stated that the Ministry of Trade imports materials from abroad that are available at a quarter of their value inside Iraq, which raises question marks about them.

Member of the Parliamentary Committee, Kazem Al-Fayyadh, told the "Al-Jabal" platform today, Monday, that "the Iraqi Ministry of Trade imports food items for the food basket from abroad at very high prices, while the same items are produced inside Iraq at a quarter of their value."

He added, "There are many question marks over it, because it did not go to these factories and insisted on importing materials from abroad."

Al-Fayadh explained that "this matter makes the Ministry of Commerce flourish."

The Iraqi Ministry of Trade is responsible for securing and distributing monthly food rations provided by the government to citizens. The food basket contains a number of items such as flour, oil, rice, sugar, tea, and legumes.

The Ministry of Trade imports food products from abroad, primarily Iran, Turkey, India, the Gulf, and other Asian countries. The volume of trade exchange between Iraq and these countries amounts to hundreds of billions of dollars annually, despite the presence of hundreds of local factories and plants throughout the country capable of producing various goods and materials, but most of them are idle.

Earlier, the Iraqi Ministry of Trade stated that the food basket includes 40 million and 360 thousand citizens.

According to experts, contracts concluded to supply the main materials for the food ration are calculated based on the population. Iraqi MP Nahro Mohammed said in a previous statement during his membership in the parliamentary economic and investment committee that “all citizens have a food ration card and they all deserve it,” adding that “the number of those who receive food ration card materials is very small compared to the population of Iraq, due to its delay, sometimes, and the poor quality of the materials distributed.”
