    Economy News - Follow-up
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that she held a meeting with Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, on the sidelines of the first joint summit between the Gulf Cooperation Council and the European Union in the Belgian capital, Brussels. The European Commission President described the meeting as "good."
This summit between the leaders of the European bloc and the Gulf Cooperation Council (Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the Emirates, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar) is the first of its kind.
Ursula van der Leyen said, via her account on the X platform: “We want to strengthen cooperation between the European Union and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries. And build an economic corridor to increase trade in the field of renewable energy, data and exchanges between peoples.”
The President of the European Commission also stressed that the European Union countries want to work with the Gulf Cooperation Council countries to ensure the security that we all need for economic growth.
European-Gulf call from Brussels to avoid escalation in the Middle East
The leaders of the European Union and the six Gulf Cooperation Council countries, meeting at a summit in Brussels on Wednesday, called for avoiding the outbreak of a large-scale conflict in the Middle East.
At the start of the summit, which she described as "historic," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said, "We must do everything we can and mobilize all our diplomatic skills to stop the very dangerous escalation" in the Middle East.
Von der Leyen called the meeting "historic." A second edition is scheduled to be held in Riyadh in 2026.
In a joint declaration issued at the conclusion of the summit, the participating countries called for an "immediate" ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, and the escalating confrontation between Tel Aviv and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
In addition to ongoing conflicts in the world, the meeting addressed issues such as trade, energy and climate change.
"We agreed to advance negotiations on a free trade agreement, and we must pursue all options to strengthen our economic cooperation and trade relations with all partners," EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said at a closing press conference of the summit.
The 27 EU member states are seeking to strengthen their economic relations with the six GCC states.
The European Union is the second largest trading partner of the GCC countries, while talks that began in the 1990s on a free trade agreement are still stalled.
