Russia is highly interested in the European Union’s reaction to Turkey’s plans for establishing Syrian safe zones in Syria, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russia has requested the European Union’s reaction to Turkey’s plans for creating so-called safe zones in Syria, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.
Turkey has long been pressing for an up to a 6-mile safe zone inside Syria, which it says could protect refugees in the crisis-struck country.
“… the documents and declaration signed by Turkey and the European Union [during Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu’s visit to Brussels this week] contain an indirect reference to the fact that the European Union sees the necessity of some sort of safe zones and it reads like exactly on Syrian territory. And we asked a question in Brussels on whether this approach was in line with their publically and officially declared position in support of all UN Security Council resolutions, inadmissibility of Syria’s collapse and violation of its territorial integrity. We are waiting for an answer,” Lavrov said.
