Guardian: US military waste threaten the lives of 3.6 million children in Iraq

     Translation: Abdul Khaliq Ali

A study carried out by a number of researchers in the UNICEF and published in the Journal (environmental monitoring and evaluation), that exposure to toxic substances resulting from the explosion of ammunition and burning military waste by the US military, was the cause of birth defects and cancer among Iraqi children.
And the study showed "human exposure to heavy metals and toxic substances resulting from the explosion ofbombs and bullets and other ammunition does not affect only targeted by shelling directly but also on soldiers and people living near military bases."
the study says that "3.6 million children face many risks , including death, and that 4.7 million people in need of humanitarian aid as a result of the conflict. "
she Mujkan Isfahani, a specialist Iranian toxins and lead researcher in the study, it was found dramatic amounts of concern of lead in teeth falling to Iraqi children with birth defects compared to the teeth of thechildren of Lebanon and Iran. She said during a recent visit to London , "teeth falling deciduous Iraqi children with congenital deformities carry large amounts of lead equivalent to four times the quantities in the teeth of the children of Lebanon and Iran."
This is a study of great importance because of the paucity of research and data on the impact of the war years in the Middle East on the local population. However, recent research conducted indicate a sharp increase in birth defects and premature births and abortions and cases of leukemia in Iraq and other war zones, which is supported by interviews with a lot of doctors.
It supports the study claims that the health of thousands of former US soldiers have been damaged because of air pollution caused by burning unregulated large amounts of military waste in hundreds of pits open burning during the Iraq war. It suffers more than 85 thousand US troops involved in the Iraq war from respiratory problems and cancer , neurological diseases, depression and emphysema since returning from Iraq.
Most of these soldiers said they were subjected to dig burning, where the foam and electronic materials ,metal cans and rubber tires, ammunition and explosives, human feces and animal carcasses, batteries and insulation asbestos, waste and heavy metals, are placed in the pits and hurt by jet fuel and then stir up the fire during the Iraq war.
the former sergeant Marines Joseph Hickman "there were 270 pit where flames over 24 hours for several sometimes years, and still some of them burning to this day.
He said Hickman "gather this material in a cloud of toxic substances flying over military bases and seep into sleep and work places that do not often lies more than a mile or less. They tell us that the smoke does not constitute serious. There was no regulation on the type of the burned material, all sorts of rubbish and dirt thrown into the pit. "
In 2008 conducted a study of a sample of the air at the base of the country by the US Department ofDefense, it revealed high levels of aromatic hydrocarbons and volatile organic compounds and treated organic kind of dioxins and furans particles .
In the years seventies dumped thousands of tons of herbicides containing deadly dioxin on Vietnam, Laos forests, but the health effects on veterans and communities was not announced officially for 27 years. It is noted that when the shelling starts begins with congenital malformations.
the Hickman " it was supposed to use digging open burning in Iraq - which violated not only the air safety standards to the EPA, but also lists the Pentagon - on a temporary basis until the monument incinerators fundamentalism, but it continued to operate in most of those wars , and some had them still burning until late 2015 ".
pollution on the Iraqi communities , the effects are still not fully known due to lack of research, but Mujkan says the toxic effects of air pollution have had significant damage , "we know they were burning pesticides, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, solvents and medical waste toxic heavy metals, these are all polluting substances. The dense black clouds contaminated rumor day and night. When you start the sweep, alerted to the contamination , where I was studying at the University of Basra, and got spontaneous abortions for many women. Tissue samples taken from Iraq proved the absence of a lot of research conducted for the pollution on living near drilling burning effect. "
She adds Mujkan , saying , " We found very high levels of mercury, lead, titanium and various toxic metals in the hair of children who suffer from disorders and birth defects, as well as the parents, all show that thecontamination happened since 2003 , with growing unrest and distortions. In May 2010 was 15% of the total of 547 infants born in Basra hospital suffering from birth defects, while the natural ratio is 2-4%. In late 2010 the proportion had risen to 30%. Pollution up to inside the body, where people inhale large amounts of it causes significant damage to them.
