Erbil (Kurdistan 24) - Baghdad hosted on Sunday a tripartite summit that included Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi, Jordanian King Abdullah II and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi to discuss a number of files, foremost of which is economic, security, trade and investment cooperation.
This is the latest round of talks, after the first was held in Cairo during the era of Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi in 2019, and was followed by a second summit in Amman, despite the outbreak of Corona.
In recent years, Iraq has signed cooperation agreements in the energy, health and education sectors with Jordan and Egypt as part of its efforts to open up to its Arab environment.

Al-Sisi's visit to Baghdad is the first visit by an Egyptian president to Iraq since Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in 1990. Tensions have severed relations between Iraq and Egypt, but they have improved in recent years with the exchange of visits between several senior officials of the two countries.
Shortly after Sisi's arrival, King Abdullah of Jordan arrived in Baghdad and was also received by Al-Kazemi and Iraqi President Barham Salih.

The Kurdistan 24 correspondent in Baghdad, Shavan Jabbari, said that the Baghdad summit was held amid strict security measures taken by the security authorities a day before the arrival of the two Arab leaders.
The "Baghdad Summit" was scheduled to be held last April, but it was postponed after a train accident in Egypt left dozens dead and wounded.
Egypt signed 15 agreements and memoranda of understanding in sectors including oil, roads, housing, construction and trade in February after the Iraqi Council of Ministers agreed to renew its contract to supply the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation with 12 million barrels of Basra Light crude.
Al-Kazemi said during the summit, "There are many memoranda of understanding that were previously signed between the three countries, and there are memoranda and agreements that we will sign in the near future."

In addition, a statement issued by the Egyptian presidency said, "The president affirmed Egypt's aspiration to develop bilateral cooperation with Iraq in a sustainable framework of economic integration and strategic cooperation, especially in light of the great challenges facing the region."
Iraq plans to build a pipeline to export one million barrels per day of Iraqi crude from the southern city of Basra to the Jordanian port of Aqaba on the Red Sea.
Prior to that, Al-Kazemi held separate talks with Al-Sisi, which dealt with "the stages of implementing what was agreed upon earlier, within the framework of the work of the tripartite Iraqi-Egyptian-Jordanian summit."
Al-Kazemi also discussed with the Jordanian monarch "files of joint cooperation in the field of combating terrorism, rejecting extremism and adopting everything that would enhance stability in the region, on the path of sustainable development and taking into account the interests of friendly and brotherly peoples," according to a statement issued by his office.

In parallel, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said during a tripartite press conference with his Iraqi and Egyptian counterparts that "our relations with Egypt and Iraq are based on a common political vision."
Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said, "We seek with Jordan and Iraq to face challenges," and said that the fourth Egyptian-Jordanian-Iraqi summit will be held in Cairo.

The "Baghdad Summit" comes as an affirmation of a mutual desire between Iraq, Jordan and Egypt to launch a new phase of relations and frameworks of joint cooperation.
At the opening of the summit, Sisi said, "This historic summit ... comes as a continuation of what was achieved during the Cairo and Amman summits. We hope that it will truly inaugurate a new phase of strategic partnership and close cooperation between our countries, in pursuit of a stage of sustainable development and prosperity for our peoples."

The media reported that the "New Levant" project, the joint venture between the three countries, topped the work of the summit, including cooperation in the economic and investment fields.
And “The New Sham” was launched by Al-Kazemi for the first time during his visit to the United States last summer, and he told the Washington Post at the time that he intends to engage in the European scheme project that brings Cairo with Baghdad, and Amman joined him, to establish a regional front that can confront challenges.
