Donald Trump said Tuesday night that “the terrorist threat has never been greater,” following the deadly bombing at Istanbul’s Ataturk airport.
“Our prayers are with the families of those killed and injured in Istanbul,” Trump said in a statement. “The whole world is stunned and horrified.”
At press time, the Istanbul attack, carried out by three terrorists, had left 36 people dead and 147 other injured. No terror group has yet claimed responsibility for the assault, but Turkish officials suspect it was carried out by radicals with the Islamic State.
“The terrorist threat has never been greater,” Trump’s statement continued. “Our enemies are brutal and ruthless and will do anything to murder those who do not bend to their will. We must take steps now to protect America from terrorists, and do everything in our power to improve our security to keep America safe.”

Trump doubled down on his call for stricter security in the U.S. during a rally in St. Clairsville, Ohio, Tuesday evening, telling supporters, “We better get smart and we better get tough or we’re not going to have much of a country left.”
“Folks, there’s something going on that’s really, really bad, alright,” Trump said. “It’s bad.”
This comes as the Trump campaign appears to be softening the tone of the billionaire businessman’s controversial Muslim ban, shifting toward a country-specific ban instead. However, Trump spokeswoman Katrina Pierson insists there is no policy shift.
