The Calgary Flames concluded 2016 in style by winning their final game, and three of their last four overall.

After a long layoff, they'll look to build on that tonight when they play host to the Colorado Avalanche.

They figure to have a good chance of doing so as the Avalanche have been an abomination this year from start to finish. At 5v5, they rank 28th in possession, 29th in shots for percentage, and 29th in scoring chance for percentage.

From afar, it's probably hard to believe a team that features the likes of Nathan MacKinnon, Matt Duchene, Gabriel Landeskog and Tyson Barrie, among others, could be so bad.

Then you see a shift like this and have no choice to believe it.

This Avs team has struggled all year but they've taken it up another notch of late winning just once in their last 10 games. This is a game the Flames should win, and a game they need to win if they're serious about giving themselves any breathing room down the stretch.

Here are the expected line combinations for the Flames:

Matthew Tkachuk - Mikael Backlund - Michael Frolik
Johnny Gaudreau - Sean Monahan - Alex Chiasson
Kris Versteeg - Sam Bennett - Micheal Ferland
Lance Bouma - Matt Stajan - Garnet Hathaway

    Mark Giordano - Dougie Hamilton
    T.J. Brodie - Dennis Wideman
    Jyrki Jokipakka - Deryk Engelland

    Brian Elliott

And the expected lines for the Avalanche (via dailyfaceoff.com):

Gabriel Landeskog - Nathan MacKinnon - Mikko Rantanen
Mikhail Grigorenko - Matt Duchene - Rene Bourque
Blake Comeau - Carl Soderberg - Jarome Iginla
Cody McLeod - John Mitchell - Andreas Martinsen

    Fedor Tyutin - Tyson Barrie
    Francois Beauchemin - Nikita Zadorov
    Patrick Wiercioch - Eric Gelinas

    Calvin Pickard

    A few notes:

    1) Pickard has dropped four consecutive starts and allowed 18 goals(!) in that span. The defense has been playing poorly, but he hasn't been any better. The Flames should test him early and often tonight.

    2) Look for another strong showing from the Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik trio in this game. They've been spectacular at 5v5 while, as mentioned above, the Avs are at the bottom of the barrel in terms of pretty much every category in that game state.

    3) Monahan went on a double digit game point streak, but has nothing in five games since snapping out of it. Tonight's game, against a poor defensive team that has had terrible goaltending, seems like an ideal spot to snap out of it.

Tonight's game is scheduled for 10:00 eastern and can be seen on SNW and ALT.
