The Ottawa Senators downed the league leading Washington Capitals following a nice ceremony that saw Bryan Murray inducted as the first member of the Senators Ring of Honour. The Capitals presented Murray, who still holds the Washington franchise record for wins, with a team-signed jersey sporting the number 343, the number of wins he had behind the Caps bench. The visitors voted to come out to partake in the ceremony, with Alex Ovechkin stating that Murray is a big part of the history of the franchise and the team wanted to acknowledge that. Kudos to them for making that decision.

Washington had been on quite a roll heading into this one, having scored four or more goals in 11 of their last 13 games. The lone two exceptions were the two they played against the Ottawa Senators, although the Caps took both of those games by scores of 2-1 and 1-0. With the 3-0 win on Tuesday, the Senators have held Washington to three goals in three games in a month where they have been lighting up everyone else.

Ottawa held the Capitals in check, this time on the strength of a near perfect game and a 31 save performance from Mike Condon, who earned his 4th shutout of the season and the Senators' eighth of the season in total. It was also his second shutout in eight days, with both coming against teams that were first place overall in the league at the time. Unlike the earlier games against Washington, this time they found enough offense against backup Philipp Grubauer to go along with the very good defensive effort. They scored shorthanded, on the power play and also one shortly after a power play had expired.

The Senators took an early penalty but Tom Pyatt and Jean-Gabriel Pageau combined to tally a man down to give themselves an early lead and as it turned out, was all they would need. Bobby Ryan deflected home a Freddie Claesson shot a couple of minutes later just after Alex Ovechkin got out of the penalty box to double the lead and the Capitals never really threatened other than on the power play. Ottawa gave them chances to the tune of six power play opportunities, but Condon turned away 8 shots and the Senators did a nice job of keeping the Caps to the outside.

A day after signing his contract extension Zack Smith put the final nail in the Caps coffin with a power play goal in the second period. The Senators didn't sit back in the third period, not allowing the Capitals to get any momentum. The visitors might have been feeling the effects of a tough travel schedule of late and a game in D.C. the previous night, but a goal late in the second or early in the third might have given them some jump in their legs.

The Senators took advantage of the situation they were presented with and you can't fault them for that. Also, they did it without the services of sniper Mike Hoffman, who missed the game with the flu.

With one game left before the All-Star break the Senators will try to go into this break like they did the Christmas break - on a winning note. They will face the Calgary Flames, who are limping into town on Thursday on a four game losing streak and by then could very well be looking up at the playoff race in the West from the outside, having also played more games than those currently chasing them and poised to pass them.

The Senators will showcase their newest addition on Thursday, with Tommy Wingels likely to be in the lineup. Ottawa acquired Wingels from San Jose yesterday in exchange for Buddy Robinson, Zach Stortini and a 7th round pick. Unhappy with the production from the fourth line, Wingels will provide a spark, can move around in the lineup if needed and can be a good penalty killer. It was as much a wake-up call to the likes of Curtis Lazar as much as anything, but a little depth never hurts and Wingels might not be a full time top 6 level forward, but could fill in that role if needed in a short term fix and will certainly bolster the bottom 6.
