Sergei Bobrovsky has been announced as the Blue Jackets nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.

The Masterton is given to the player who “best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to ice hockey.” The Columbus Chapter of the PHWA made the right choice nominating Bobrovsky.

After winning the Vezina Trophy in 2012-13, Bobrovsky dropped off in each of the next two seasons as he battled injuries. Things reached their lowest point last season when Bobrovsky battled numerous groin injuries and was only able to play in 37 games. When he was on the ice he was a shell of his former self; putting up a below average .908 save percentage. He struggled mightily in the first month of the season as the Jackets went 0-8-0.

This past off-season Bobrovsky transformed his body. He focused on flexibility and getting leaner, in an effort to take some stress off of his groin. His training worked, he dropped 17 pounds in the summer and regained his Vezina quality form.

He leads the league in save percentage at .934 and goals against average at 1.99, both of which are career bests. His 40 wins also lead the league and are a career high. Most importantly Bobrovsky has been healthy, matching his career high in games played with 58.His strong play this season has been a huge reason for the Blue Jackets transformation from bottom feeder to top of the league. The Jackets have their first 100 season in franchise history, currently at 103. Bobrovsky has been in net for 85 of those 103 points.

There have been so many games this season in which he has carried the team to wins and kept them in games in which they weren’t playing well. Bobrovsky has made 35 or more saves in a game 12 times this season, which is fifth in the league. He has been the great equalizer when the Jackets haven’t played well in front of him. Of those 12 games, Bobrovsky has three shutouts and another seven wins. He’s only lost twice one of which was in OT. He seems to play at his best when the team needs it the most.

Bobrovky has been through a lot these past couple seasons, battling injuries and ineffectiveness. He persevered through all this, making him the perfect choice for Columbus’ Masterton nominee.
