Japanese stocks close lower, and 1.1% lower in the first quarter

Japan's Nikkei average fell 1.1% in the first quarter of 2017.
Japan's Nikkei is one of the few indicators that recorded a decline in the first quarter of this year as a result of the strength of the yen against the US dollar.
Japanese Nikkei closed at 18,909.2 points, down 0.8%, to its lowest level since February 9, and Topix fell nearly 1% to 1,512.6 points.
By 6:55 am GMT, the yen was up against the dollar at 0.08% at 111.85, while slightly higher against the single currency, recording 119.44 yen.
Economic data in Japan today showed consumer prices rose slightly this month from February's levels by 0.2%.
