China: We need to strengthen our military capabilities

    Date: 11:29 27/04/2017

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Thursday that Beijing needs to strengthen its military capabilities to protect its growing interests abroad in the wake of the launch of the first domestic-made aircraft carrier.

China launched the aircraft carrier on Wednesday amid rising tension over North Korea and regional concerns about Beijing's efforts to assert its influence in the South China Sea and its program to modernize the army.

Wang said during a visit to Germany that the Chinese companies and citizens are spread around the world, with millions of Chinese nationals living abroad as there are about 30 thousand Chinese companies registered in foreign countries.

The statement quoted Wang as saying, "In light of these new circumstances ... China has enough reasons to upgrade its defense capability in order to provide effective protection of the rights of fair increasingly extensive overseas" in response to a question about the new carrier.

Wang added that the increase of China's military strength will help "protect the international and regional peace," noting that Beijing will keep a military policy of "defensive" and not "have the intention to engage in any form of expansion." Finished / 25
