NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Thursday ruled out NATO participation in any "military intervention" in Iraq, Syria or Libya, although the issue was discussed at previous NATO meetings.
"The alliance has discussed formally joining the international coalition to fight a pre-emptive organization, although all NATO member states are already involved in the alliance, NATO also supports the alliance with AWACS and helps train Iraqi soldiers and officers," Stoltenberg told reporters before the meeting of EU defense ministers.
"NATO members who support the alliance's alliance with Al-Daqash alliance see this as a message of political support for the alliance and will provide a better environment for coordinating coalition support," he said, adding that no decision has yet been taken.
Stoltenberg stressed that these discussions are not related to the participation of NATO in any combat operations, pointing out in this regard that no one has made any request for NATO intervention in the combat operation, whether in Syria or Iraq, and this is not entirely possible.
With regard to the situation in Libya, the Secretary-General indicated that NATO has no plans to intervene and has not been asked to participate in any kind of military operations in Libya, but we are ready to provide assistance and support to the Libyan government to develop its security and defense institutions.
