Shafaq News / Prisoners of federal Chamchamal prison in Sulaymaniyah province in Kurdistan announced on Wednesday a hunger strike in protest at the "quality" of food allotted to them.
“The prisoners started a hunger strike yesterday after they threatened to burn the prison,” an official source in Chamchamal prison told “Shafaq News”.
He added that the strikers demanded the improvement of the quality of the food allotted to them.
More than ten prisoners in Chamchamal prison lost consciousness yesterday due to hunger and thirst, after the contract of the contractor to provide prison with food and water with the Iraqi Ministry of Justice ended and was not renewed, according to a source from inside the prison.
The source said that prison officials have bought food for the prisoners from their own money.
Prisoners from central and southern governorates threatened to burn it if they didn’t received food.
