North Korea has raised the challenge of confronting the international community by choosing to launch the latest ballistic missile launch ahead of the expected search by US, Japanese and South Korean leaders for efforts to curb Pyongyang's nuclear and missile tests.
The new missile test comes days ahead of a summit of G20 leaders in Germany, where talks are expected to be held on the sidelines to discuss ways to rein in Pyongyang, which insists on pursuing its nuclear program in violation of UN Security Council resolutions.
North Korea fired one medium-range missile from close to Yangon airport at dawn on Tuesday and monitored it for 37 minutes before landing in the Sea of Japan, the US Pacific Command said in a statement, saying it was "not a threat to North America."
The South Korean army chief of staff also confirmed the launch of the missile from the North-West region in the sea off the east coast of its southern neighbor, noting that it had started for a distance of 930 kilometers, without initial reports being able to determine its height.
In Tokyo, the Japanese government said the rocket had been launched for about 40 minutes and that it may have landed in Japan's Special Economic Zone, while Japan's Secretary-General Yoshi Hadi Suga said it was a violation of UN Security Council resolutions.
"This launch of a ballistic missile is a clear violation of UN Security Council resolutions, and repeated North Korean provocations like this provocation are totally unacceptable," he told reporters. "We have made a strong protest and we condemn it (the launch)."
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said he planned to ask the leaders of China and Russia at the G-7 summit on July 7 to play a more positive role in dealing with North Korea seeking to develop a nuclear-capable missile.
North Korea was one of the main topics in telephone contacts between US President Donald Trump and the leaders of China and Japan. The leaders of the two Asian countries reaffirmed their commitment to the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.
The launch also comes just ahead of the US Independence Day celebrations on July 4. North Korea has already fired missiles by the American holiday.
South Korean President Moon Jay-en requested a meeting of the National Security Council at 0230 GMT after being informed of the missile, the Blue House said.
Following his first summit with Moon last week, Trump called for a tough response to North Korea, stressing the importance of the alliance between the two countries.
