    The Parliamentary Foreign Relations Committee commented, today, Monday (November 18, 2024), on the possibility of the United States of America to limit China's influence in Iraq .
    Committee member Mukhtar al-Moussawi told Baghdad Today, "Iraq is a sovereign country and it controls its foreign relations, whether political, economic, or otherwise. The United States of America cannot be allowed to interfere in this matter and determine with whom Iraq will have economic and other relations."
    He added, "China is an important partner country for Iraq, especially in the economic and investment aspects and in various fields. The United States of America cannot influence this partnership or work to limit Chinese influence in the sectors in which it operates in Iraq, as Iraq categorically rejects this matter."
    International media outlets revealed, today, Monday (November 18, 2024), a fierce conflict between the United States and China to seize Iraqi oil.
    The media reported that "the United States of America seeks to limit Chinese influence in Iraq, which has been expanding in recent years, especially with Chinese companies controlling major oil contracts."
    He added, "Washington is trying to prevent Beijing from seizing investment opportunities and controlling the Iraqi economy, especially since Iraq is one of the most prominent importers from China, and has announced many investment opportunities in recent years."
    Republican Party strategist John Akouri says, “Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has never lived outside his country, so he has no loyalties outside Iraq’s borders, and I hope he will be instrumental in moving Iraq forward.”
    "Development and stability in Iraq make it a candidate to play a major role, not only in the region, but in other parts of the world," he added, noting that "the previous US administration put policy towards Iraq at the bottom of the list, and this allowed China and Iran to exploit the gap and vacuum. I hope we will see a different role with the next administration."
    Chinese entities own more than 46 percent of the Rumaila oil field in Iraq, the largest Iraqi oil field in terms of production, and the second largest in the world. Other Chinese companies also manage about 34 percent of Iraq’s proven reserves, in addition to two-thirds of current production. These figures indicate growing Chinese influence over Iraqi oil production .
    “The United States needs to study the factors that make China successful in Iraq, and the other factors that make it uncompetitive as well. This is where we need to start,” said Abbas Kadhim, director of the Iraq Initiative at the Atlantic Council. “The Trump administration is not new, it has been in power for four years, so I think it can recalculate how Washington can become a country with the economic capacity to compete with China and other countries.”
    He added, "It is healthy for Iraq to have multiple relations with other countries, and Washington can offer a lot to Iraq if the relationship between them is economically normalized. I believe that the United States will not have an economic opportunity in Iraq as long as it mixes politics with economics."
    According to OPEC figures, since the signing of the 2019 agreement between Iraq and China, Iraqi oil exports to China have increased by about 20 percent, reaching more than one million barrels of oil per day in 2023, and Beijing topped the list of importers of Iraq's black gold.
