US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that transgender individuals would not be allowed to serve in the US military in any way.
"After consultation with generals and military experts, please know that the US government will not allow transgender individuals to serve in any way in the US military," Trump said in a series of tweets on his Twitter account.
"Our army must focus on decisive and crushing victory," he said. "It can not be burdened with the enormous medical costs and the disruption that may entail the transfer of converts."
The US Department of Defense lifted its ban on transgender converts publicly in 2016 under President Barack Obama. This year, it was expected that this year would include the inclusion of transferees on the condition that they had been selected for 18 months.
US Defense Secretary Jim Matisse agreed last month to postpone the recruitment of transgender people to the US armed forces for six months.
The postponement fueled concern for transgender rights defenders. As soon as Trump was released, the US Civil Liberties Union asked transgender army personnel to contact their lawyers for help.
"Thousands of converts serve in the army on the front lines and deserve better treatment than the supreme commander," the union said.
"We will continue to work closely with the White House to deal with the new commander's instructions on transgender people serving in the military," the Pentagon spokesman said.
According to former Defense Secretary Ash Carter, a study by the Rand Study Center states that there are 2,500 transgender people among the US armed forces and 1,500 among the reserve forces.
