Trump threatens Venezuela with military intervention

    Date of release: 2017/8/12

US President Donald Trump has threatened military intervention in Venezuela in a surprise escalation of Washington's response to the political crisis in Venezuela, which Caracas has described as madness.
In recent days, Venezuela appears to have been sliding into a more turbulent phase after anti-government forces looted weapons from a military base in the wake of a new legislature controlling the Congressional authority, which was dominated by the opposition.
"People are suffering and dying, and we have many options, including a possible military option if necessary," Trump told reporters at a question and answer session.
The comments appeared to have shocked Caracas and Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino described the threat as "madness".
"Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro asked for a telephone call with Trump on Friday and apparently rejected the White House, saying in a statement that Trump would speak with pleasure to the Venezuelan leader when restoring democracy in the country," the White House said.
Venezuelan authorities have long said US officials are planning an invasion.
A former army general said this year that some anti-aircraft missiles had been placed along the country's coast for this particular possibility.
In Washington, the Pentagon said, "The US military is ready to support efforts to protect US citizens and national interests, but Caracas's warnings of a planned US invasion are baseless.

" Trump's threat came after a repeat military threat if Korea threatened Northern United States
