WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US President Donald Trump signed a law imposing sanctions on Russia on Wednesday, although in private he opposed imposing sanctions.
The sources said the White House, Trump signed the law behind closed doors away from the lenses of photographers, according to "AFP".
By signing the law, he avoids the possibility that Congress will bypass it and also become effective.
The law imposes a tough new set of sanctions on Russia for its alleged involvement in the US presidential election in favor of Trump last year and the annexation of the Ukrainian Crimea.
Trump's aides have tried to pressure Russia not to impose sanctions, but they have retreated. US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said on Tuesday that all evidence "suggests Trump will approve the law."
At the end of July, the US Senate imposed new sanctions on Russia with overwhelming majority.
Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the expulsion of 755 US diplomats and the seizure of two American facilities in Russia.
