US President Donald Trump hailed the UN Security Council's unanimous decision to impose tough economic sanctions on North Korea, saying sanctions would have a major financial impact on Pyongyang's regime. "It is the biggest package of economic sanctions against North Korea.
"The president appreciates China and Russia for their cooperation to ensure that the resolution is passed," the White House said in a statement, adding that it continued to work with allies and partners to strengthen diplomatic pressure on North Korea to deter it and curb its destabilizing behavior.
For his part, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged North Korea to take a "smart decision" after the Security Council adopted a unanimous resolution in favor of sanctions on Kim Jong-un's regime.
The UN Security Council has unanimously passed a resolution imposing tough sanctions on North Korea, which denies Pyongyang its export revenue in the iron, coal and fishing sectors, estimated at about $ 1 billion a year. Resolution 2371 also prohibits the establishment of any new joint venture between North Korean and foreign companies and suspends any additional investment in existing companies and prevents the increase of their shares of overseas workers. The decision also suspends dealing with North Korea's foreign trade bank, which manages foreign currency trading.
The resolution aims to push Pyongyang to negotiate after it launched two intercontinental ballistic missiles on July 4 and then on the 28th of this month, which was seen by major powers as a threat to global security.
Since North Korea's first missile test in 2006, the United Nations has imposed a package of sanctions on Pyongyang to discourage it from pursuing its nuclear and nuclear program.
