UNITED NATIONS - The United Nations on Thursday called for a humanitarian truce to allow some 20,000 civilians trapped in thinness to leave and urged the US-led coalition to scale back its air strikes that have already killed victims.
"The boats in the Euphrates should not be attacked and the fugitives should not be subjected to air raids when they leave," Jan Egeland, the UN's humanitarian adviser in Syria, told reporters in Geneva.
"The time is now to think about what is possible - hurdles or other things that can facilitate the flight of civilians, and we know that the fighters of the organization are trying to do their best to keep them in place." Ramzi Ezzeddin Ramzi, deputy UN special envoy to Syria, said the international body was still assessing the outcome of talks this week in Riyadh between three opposition groups in Syria that have failed to unite.
"We will determine how to proceed in the future based on our assessment of what happened in Riyadh," he said in response to a question on whether Syrian peace talks would be held in Geneva in September.
