The Russian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday expressed its deep concern about the threat of escalation on the Korean peninsula, expecting new pressure on sanctions against Pyongyang following the recent missile test.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stressed that the situation on the Korean Peninsula had been progressive, adding that the recent maneuvers by Washington and Seoul had complicated the situation and provoked Pyongyang.
Ripkov told reporters from the Kazakh capital Astana that Moscow expects new pressure to strengthen sanctions against North Korea. Pointing out at the same time that the stockpile of those sanctions have been exhausted.
North Korea launched a medium-range ballistic missile on Japanese territory early Tuesday and landed in the Pacific Ocean three days after Pyongyang launched three short-range missiles.
Washington and Seoul have threatened Pyongyang with a "strong response" if it continues its "provocations" in the future.
Japan, South Korea and the United States called for a UN Security Council session, calling on Tokyo, Moscow and Beijing to take a "more effective" stance on North Korea.
The situation on the Korean Peninsula is aggravated by Pyongyang's development of its missile program.
