[ltr]The former US ambassador to Baghdad, Ryan Crocker, said the referendum in the Kurdistan region is not surprising, pointing out that Washington was wrong to stand against him.[/ltr]
[ltr]Crocker told Al-Hayat newspaper that "Washington's stand against the referendum has strengthened Baghdad, with punitive measures that complicate the crisis." "The issue of the Kurds is very long and the non-binding referendum was not surprising."[/ltr]
[ltr]"The KRG is aware of the complexities and understands that without good relations with Baghdad it is difficult to reach an independent state," he said. "The referendum is the beginning of a long process, and Washington has to mediate."[/ltr]

[ltr]"The administration of US President Donald Trump has made a mistake in dealing with the referendum," he said, pointing out that "the tone of the American rejection gave the green light to respond and force to resort."[/ltr]
[ltr]Crocker stressed that "the absence of violence in Kirkuk is encouraging," stressing "the importance of finding a solution to the problems between Baghdad and Erbil, opening Washington channels of communication with everyone."[/ltr]
