The Nobel Foundation announced on Monday that scientists Jeffrey Hall, Michael Rospach and Michael Yang won the Nobel Prize for Medicine for 2017 thanks to their discovery of molecular mechanisms that control human biological clock.
These mechanisms help to explain things such as why people who travel long distances and cross several time zones are affected by disorders such as sleep disorders and have wider health implications such as a higher risk of certain diseases.
"Their discoveries explain how humans, plants and animals adapt their biological rhythm to the Earth's rotation," the Nobel Society of Sweden's Karolinska Institute said in a statement.
The scientists used the fruit fly to isolate a gene that controls the normal rhythm of the biological clock and to show how the gene encodes a protein that accumulates in the cell during the day and recedes at night.
"The [biological] clock regulates vital functions such as behavior, hormone levels, sleep, body temperature and metabolism," the association said.
The prize is worth SEK 9 million [$ 1.1 million].
Thomas Perlman, secretary-general of the Nobel Prize Committee at the Karolinska Institute, described Rospash's reaction when he first reported victory. "He was silent and then he said: 'You are playing with me,'" he said.
The Nobel Prize is the first Nobel Prize to be awarded annually, and since 1901 the Nobel Prizes have been awarded in the fields of science, literature and peace, in accordance with the command of Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite.
Nobel winners in medicine include bone scientists such as Alexander Fleming, the discoverer of penicillin and Carl Landstainer, who identified different blood groups, opening the way for safe transfusions.
But the prize did not go unchallenged in terms of benefits versus harm, such as the granting in 1948 of DDT, a chemical that helped fight epidemics but was later banned because of its harmful environmental impact.
