The complexities on the ground in Iraq are too great to be exacerbated by US Secretary of State Rex Tilerson's comments on popular mobilization and his call for foreign militias to return to their countries, retired general Mark Hertling told CNN.
"The situation in Iraq (after Tilerson's statements) will not get any messier. It's already in chaos and complexity. I've spent three years in northern Iraq and what is striking is that such statements are not reflected in the existing situations and complexities," he said.
"What I propose to Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi is to understand the challenges he faces as Shi'ites enter the Sunni areas of northern and western Iraq, and he has to absorb the challenges between Arabs and Kurds in his country, which we have seen recently, especially in Kirkuk."
