French Interior Minister Gerard Coulomb said Thursday that more than 240 people have returned from combat zones in Syria and Iraq since 2012, the majority of whom are imprisoned.
"More than 240 people, plus more than 50 minors, most of whom are under the age of 12, have returned to France since 2012," Colomb told the Senate.
"France is taking care of this problem completely today," said Colombian Senator Nathalie Gulet, who said the return of fighters from Syria and Iraq to Europe "is a cause for concern in the short, medium and long term."
He said that since 2015, the authorities regularly keep watch over returning women and men as well as "some minor combatants," while "more than 130 people are in prison now." The rest are "administratively prosecuted".
"Agreements signed between France and Turkey to control the flow of migrants allow Paris to closely monitor those returning from the battlefields in Syria and Iraq, who could commit attacks in France," he said.
