[ltr]US officials say Pentagon will approve deployment of 2,000 troops in Syria Qwed[/ltr]
    [ltr]Follow up of Mawazine News[/ltr]
[ltr]The Pentagon is likely to announce in the coming days that there are about 2,000 US troops in Syria, Reuters quoted US officials as saying.[/ltr]
[ltr]The US military had earlier announced it was deploying about 500 troops in Syria, most of them to support the Syrian-led forces of Kurdish and Arab factions battling a militant organization in the north of the country.[/ltr]
[ltr]The two officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the Pentagon could announce Monday that it was deploying just over 2,000 troops in Syria, adding that there was always the possibility of changes in schedules at the last moment that could delay any announcement.[/ltr]
[ltr]This is not a change in the number of soldiers already on the ground, but it is only an accurate inventory showing the change in numbers from time to time. For example, on November 16, the Pentagon announced that it was deploying 14,000 troops in Afghanistan, modifying the old 11,000.[/ltr]
[ltr]The Foresight Verification system in Iraq and Syria was introduced during the administration of former President Barack Obama as a means of exercising control over the military.[/ltr]
[ltr]The figures under this inventory system do not include troops temporarily deployed to perform a specific task and do not include contractors contracted by US forces.[/ltr]
[ltr]The figures of the official inventory system indicate that there are 5262 military personnel in Iraq and 503 military personnel in Syria.[/ltr]
[ltr]The Pentagon said in December it would increase the number of troops in Syria to 500, but it was not clear when and how the number increased.[/ltr]
[ltr]Most of the US forces deployed in Syria are Special Operations Forces, which train and advise local partner forces, including support for artillery against militant militants.[/ltr]
