The United Nations special envoy to Syria, Stephane de Mistura, said Tuesday that "the Syrian regime has not confirmed until now the participation" in the eighth round of the Geneva negotiations. "
"We received last night a message that the (Syrian) government delegation will not travel to Geneva and we hope that it will be on its way to Geneva very soon," de Mistura added. "The Geneva meetings are the basis for reaching a settlement."
The Syrian opposition, during a meeting in Riyadh a few days ago, formed a unified delegation to participate in the Geneva negotiations, after the regime was criticizing the dispersion of the opposition forces.
In a briefing to members of the UN Security Council via a television channel from Geneva, the UN envoy expressed "grave concern about the escalation of violence in the eastern Ghouta in recent weeks and the continuing restrictions on humanitarian access to the region."
"While a coup is being defeated, neither side (the regime and the opposition) should redress their weapons towards the areas where the escalation has taken place," de Mistura said.
"So I would urge the sponsors of the Astana meetings (Turkey, Russia and Iran) to address this challenge, to avoid this problem in areas where it is agreed to ease the escalation," he said.
Under the auspices of Turkey, Russia and Iran, the parties to the Syrian conflict, during meetings in the Kazakh capital Astana, reached an agreement this year to reduce tension in a number of Syrian regions.
