The European Commission announced new humanitarian aid estimated at 25 million euros, about 29 million dollars to support the most needy civilians in Yemen, bringing the total funding of the European Union to 196.7 million euros since the start of the crisis in 2015.

"The European Union is committed to providing support to the Yemeni people, and our new funding will support key United Nations bodies operating in the field," Humanitarian and Crisis Management Commissioner Christos Stilianides said in a statement on Sunday.

The assistance will support food distribution by the World Food Program (WFP), as well as enhance humanitarian logistics and transport efficiency through United Nations humanitarian air services.

Stelianides stressed that the EU has provided aid to Yemen during the current year when the cholera epidemic is present. He pointed out that the current measures and the armed clashes in Sana'a in recent days threaten to deprive people of food aid, water and basic services.

He urged priority to be given to protecting civilians and allowing access to aid, otherwise Yemen would suffer from the world's largest famine in decades.

Yemen faces the worst humanitarian crisis in the world, with 22.2 million people affected, or 80 percent of the population. Yemen relies on imports to secure 90 percent of food, fuel and medicines. The marked lack of fuel has raised food prices and hampered the availability of clean water and sanitation for millions of Yemenis.
