Former Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer said on Thursday that Saudi Arabia's weakness in the face of Iran and its inability to fight a battle with it alone pushed it into an alliance with Israel.
"Saudi Arabia is too weak to be alone in a war with Iran, so its alliance with Israel will be a raider force in the Middle East," Fisher said in an article published on the Euro News website. "The Israeli-Palestinian conflict lost its importance in the region after the invasion Iraq in 2003, and then after the beginning of the Arab Spring in late 2010.
"For the Saudis, confronting Iran is the top priority, and because the kingdom is too weak and unable to win this battle itself, especially in Lebanon and Syria, it will continue to strengthen its relations with Iran's other rivals, especially Israel."
"The emerging alliance between Saudi Arabia and Israel - which no one has ever imagined - is likely to become one of the driving forces of a new Middle East, and over time the price of this anti-Iranian alliance will become apparent." Ending / 25
