Belgium has announced that it is ending its involvement in the operation of the F-16 aircraft deployed in the Middle East as part of Operation Desert Falcon, according to the Belgian army.
The planes landed at around 12:30 am (1130 GMT) at the Kleine Bruegl Air Base in Limburg (east). The pilots were greeted by Defense Secretary Stephen Vandipot with a number of military commanders and their families.
The Belgian Ministry of Defense announced a few days ago that it plans to return aircraft "after an 18-month mission against the organization calling the terrorist"
The mission began on June 27, 2016, with Belgium sending six F-16s as part of a rotation agreed upon with the Dutch Air Force.
But with the formation of a government in The Hague this summer, three months after the country's legislative elections, the Dutch army was unable to send a rotating force as originally planned, and Belgium agreed to extend its mission, reducing the number of aircraft from six to four. According to AFP.
"In early 2018, the Dutch Air Force will re-launch its F-16s in service in the Middle East," the Defense Ministry said in the statement. Belgium will remain involved in Operation Desert Saqr. Our country will provide protection forces for Dutch unity. "
