[ltr]US judge releases Iraqis with deportation orders 4[/ltr]
    [ltr]Follow up of Mawazine News[/ltr]
[ltr]A US judge has ordered the government to release Iraqi migrants arrested last year or to allow them to hear their release pending the latest judicial review of President Donald Trump's administration's efforts to tighten immigration rules to the United States.[/ltr]
[ltr]Last year, the federal government arrested hundreds of Iraqi migrants who were sentenced years ago for deportation because of criminal conviction.[/ltr]
[ltr]Iraq refused until recently to receive them, but struck an agreement with the United States in March to reclaim its citizens. This was followed by arrests of migrants.[/ltr]
[ltr]Iraqis and civil rights organizations representing them filed a lawsuit against the federal government.[/ltr]
[ltr]Judge Mark Goldsmith in Detroit had previously stopped deporting Iraqis, many of whom were Christians, who said they would be persecuted if returned to Iraq.[/ltr]
[ltr]In his ruling on Tuesday, Goldsmith said any one of the Iraqis held for six months or more should be released or brought before a judge within 30 days to consider his release pending the case.[/ltr]
[ltr]"Our legal tradition prohibits the detention of people while determining their legal rights," he said.[/ltr]

[ltr]The Trump administration has tried to deport Iraqis as part of its campaign to increase implementation of immigration decisions and to prompt countries to receive their citizens who have been ordered to leave the United States after they have resisted in the past.[/ltr]

[ltr]Information provided by Iraqi lawyers to the court indicates that since June the immigration authorities have arrested some 300 Iraqis who have been given final deportation orders.[/ltr]
[ltr]The United States has about 1,400 Iraqis who have been given final deportation orders.[/ltr]
[ltr]Judge Goldsmith said his sentence applied to Iraqi detainees in similar circumstances across the country even if they were not involved in the case.[/ltr]
[ltr]The Justice Ministry, representing the government in the case, did not respond to a request for comment.[/ltr]
    [ltr]is over[/ltr]
