    [rtl]Trend Press / Agencies[/rtl]

[rtl]Lebanese traders and citizens said that local markets are in a state of chaos and the fall in prices of goods and services because of recent laws that included increased wages and taxes .[/rtl]

[rtl]They stressed that the situation has worsened since the beginning of this year as the government began implementing an increase in value added tax by 1 percent, up to 11 percent .[/rtl]

[rtl]New decrees and laws have contributed to large price increases in light of the increase in money supply following an increase in the wages of public sector workers, which has worsened the situation of the poor and the private sector .[/rtl]

[rtl]The government's decision to increase the value-added tax (VAT) under a law issued last October in an effort to finance the bill of the grade and salary series for public sector employees approved last September .[/rtl]

[rtl]The issuance of the law on the increase in value added tax, which came into force earlier this year, was accompanied by a big debate between the opposition parties and the opposition, describing it as unfair to the citizen who does not work for the government .[/rtl]

[rtl]Although the decision exempted about 90 commodities from the tax, but many traders and importers exploited it to increase the prices of dozens of exempted goods, especially food .[/rtl]

[rtl]The list exempted meat, cereals, oils, dairy products, vegetables, fruits, flour, sugar and salt from the value added tax, but prices did not escape the rise .[/rtl]

[rtl]The tax included alcoholic beverages, cigarettes, tobacco and special cosmetics imported from abroad, as well as a tax on business class tickets .[/rtl]

[rtl]Since last year, Lebanese public finances have been under pressure with the announcement of the first budget in more than a decade, amid government steps to raise taxes and employ projected revenues to finance public service pay and promotions.[/rtl]
