    [ltr]The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Saturday accused an American warship of entering its territorial waters without authorization, while threatening to take measures to ensure the protection of its sovereignty.[/ltr]
    [ltr]"On the evening of January 17, the US destroyer Huber approached and became 12 nautical miles from Huangyan Island in the South China Sea," the ministry said on its website, according to Reuters news agency.[/ltr]
    [ltr]Huangyan Island is also known as Scarborough, located in the South China Sea and disputed by the Philippines and China.[/ltr]
    [ltr]"The ship has violated the sovereignty and security interests of China and threatened the safety of ships and individuals in the area," said ministry spokesman Lu Kang. 
    The United States has criticized China for building islands and military installations in the region, while noting that it could be used to restrict the freedom of navigation.[/ltr]

    [ltr]US ships have conducted a series of patrols in the area to emphasize freedom of navigation.[/ltr]
    [ltr]"China opposes the use of free navigation as a justification for harming its sovereignty," Lu Kang said, urging the United States to "correct its mistakes."[/ltr]
    [ltr]"The United States' repeated dispatch of warships to the region undermines regional peace and stability and harms bilateral relations," the Ministry of Defense said in a statement.[/ltr]
