Information / follow up ..
A confidential report by the UN Security Council's sanctions committee revealed that most of the armed groups involved in the smuggling of people and goods in Libya have links to official security institutions in the country.
"Armed groups, which are part of broader political and military alliances, have specialized in illegal smuggling activities, particularly smuggling of people and goods," said the experts who prepared the report, published on Wednesday.
Most of these armed groups "belong nominally to official security institutions," they said.
The experts, who prepared the report, are charged with reporting on the arms embargo and sanctions imposed by the Security Council on Libya in 2011.
According to the report, Eritrean migrants reported to the sanctions monitors that they had been arrested by "Special Deterrent Forces", an armed group of the Ministry of the Interior of the internationally recognized National Reconciliation Government, and handed over to multiple smuggling gangs.
The commission said it was working to "assess whether the leadership of the Special Deterrent Forces was aware of the collusion and smuggling operations within their ranks."
"The Committee is concerned about the possible use of state facilities and public funds by armed groups and smugglers to strengthen their control over migration routes," they said.
Hundreds of thousands of migrants have arrived in Europe, especially Italy, by sea since 2014, coming from Libya, and thousands of people have died on those flights.
