Saudi Arabia has given Air India permission to fly over its territory to and from Israel, while the Saudi and Indian sides have yet to comment on Netanyahu's statement, the prime minister said.
The lifting of the ban on the use of "Israel" airspace for 70 years, a strong indicator of the relaxation of relations between Tel Aviv and Riyadh, allies of Washington and the concerns about the increase of Iranian influence in the region.
Last month, Air India announced that it planned to operate three flights a week to Tel Aviv via Saudi airspace, but the General Authority for Civil Aviation in Riyadh denied any permission to fly to India.
In turn, it addressed the Israeli airline El Al, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) officially, to help obtain approval to use Saudi airspace to compete with Indian Airlines.
Ghonein Osechkin, CEO of El Al, said that the company is flying 4 weekly flights to Mumbai, each with 7 hours instead of 5, because the aircraft have to travel south towards Ethiopia and from east to India to avoid using Saudi airspace.
