US President Donald Trump has frozen more than $ 200 million in funds for reconstruction efforts in Syria, while his administration is re-evaluating its role in the conflict there, according to a US newspaper.
The Wall Street Journal, quoting US officials, said the White House ordered the State Department to freeze the funds.
The officials said Trump made the decision after seeing a news report that indicated that the United States had recently pledged an additional $ 200 million to support early reconstruction efforts in Syria.
The foreign minister, who will leave office, has pledged to pay the sum at a Kuwait conference of the alliance against Da'ash in February.
According to the newspaper, the decision is in line with Trump's remarks Thursday on the US withdrawal from Syria, when he said during a speech in the city of Richfield, Ohio that US forces in Syria will leave the areas of deployment there "very soon."
We will leave Syria very soon, let's let others take care of it, "he said.
"We will control 100 percent of the land of the Caliphate as they call it," he said. "We will all recover quickly, but we will get out of there soon." Finished
