Seoul is considering an agreement to "end the state of war" with Pyongyang
South Korea's presidential office has said it is considering how a decades-old truce with the North neighbor could lead to a permanent peace deal in the upcoming summit talks.
"According to one plan, we are considering the possibility of turning the truce on the Korean Peninsula into a permanent peace agreement," a senior South Korean official said.
"Various measures are being discussed to turn the security situation on the Korean Peninsula into a peaceful system, but this requires consultation with the countries concerned," he said.
US President Donald Trump said in talks Tuesday with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe that the two Koreas are in talks on ending the war and welcomes the move.
Trump said earlier that his foreign minister, candidate Mike Pompeo, met with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un last week and that the meeting was very smooth and a good relationship was forged between the two sides, pointing out that work is currently underway to prepare for the summit.
The announcement of the end of the war at the summit between the two Koreas and the United States is likely to come after talks on the issue at the summit of the two Koreas, North Korea and the United States.
