South Korea's defense ministry said the two Koreas began dismantling loudspeakers that were spreading counter-propaganda from their heavily fortified border on Tuesday under a pledge at their historic summit last week.
These steps, despite their simplicity, are the first practical steps towards reconciliation and come after an agreement in the joint declaration signed at Friday's summit between South Korean President Mon Jie-nen and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
A ministry official said activities in several areas along the border had confirmed North Korea was removing loudspeakers.
Seoul began to do the same at 2 pm local time, he said.
For decades, with the exception of a few breaks, the two sides have broadcast counter-propaganda through huge sets of loudspeakers as a form of psychological warfare. South Korea was broadcasting a mix of Korean news and songs and criticism of its northern neighbor's regime, while Pyongyang praised its socialist system and strongly criticized the Seoul government.
In a goodwill gesture, South Korea halted its propaganda ahead of the summit and Pyongyang followed suit.
In another small index after Friday's summit, North Korea announced on Monday that it would provide the time for half an hour to agree with the timing of its southern neighbor from May 5.
The move comes amid speculation about the venue of Kim's meeting with US President Donald Trump, who said the summit could be in three to four weeks.
Trump wrote on Twitter on Monday that Kim's meeting at the Peace House in the DMZ where Moon met Kim would be an excellent location.
But a senior US official said Singapore was still one of the most important potential sites.
South Korea's Blue Palace seems to welcome the possibility of holding the meeting in the border village of Panmunjum, where the house of peace is located.
Meanwhile, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported Tuesday that Moon had asked the United Nations to help ensure North Korea's planned nuclear test shutdown.
He added that he made the request during a phone call today with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres
