Washington Post: Trump closed an important center in Iraq

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The US military disbanded the command of US forces in Iraq on Monday as the Pentagon completed most of its operations against the Da'ash organization, the Washington Post reported.

While some saw the closure of the command center as an end to the fighting against "Daash," US officials confirmed that the battle was not yet over.
The newspaper pointed out that US President Donald Trump had announced his intention to withdraw about 2000 elements of Syria as soon as possible, but did not talk about the double number in Iraq, which is read by many in Washington that the White House does not want to affect negatively the upcoming Iraqi elections .
US commanders fear any imminent withdrawal of US troops could expose the Iraqi government to being unable to defend the country because of militant cells that could resume work.
In fact, the US forces in Iraq did not enter into direct conflicts, and worked to guide the advice and support and the operation of unmanned aircraft and provide logistical assistance, according to the newspaper pointed out that since the announcement of Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi, the defeat of "Daash" in December, The US gradually withdraws, the task force to the Iraqi forces that trained it.
The newspaper said that the official number of US troops deployed in Iraq is 5,200 soldiers, and quoted officials as saying that the US military presence in support of the elections, while Abadi said he wanted to remain these forces to facilitate the rehabilitation of Iraqi forces,
The newspaper concluded by pointing out that "Da'ash" has returned and carried out some of the attacks in Iraq, after a clear threat that he will seek to target some polling stations during the upcoming elections.
