The new US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, on "strong diplomacy" aimed at "solving problems peacefully, without the need to launch a single shot."

"We are going through difficult times, there are demands for strong leadership, and our team needs to stand up to the threats with courage and strength," Pompeo told a group of US diplomats at the State Department on Friday.

"We need strong diplomatic efforts in the Middle East to curb Iran's destabilizing behavior in Syria, Yemen and the region," he said, adding: "I am confident that our team can develop strategies that can resolve these crises."

"Fortunately, we have a president who also believes in a strong diplomacy that fully utilizes all the tools of national power to defend, first and foremost, the interests and values of the United States," he said.

He cited what he called "the huge diplomatic effort to keep the pressure on North Korea to push it toward negotiations to successfully eliminate the threat of the nuclear arsenal of Kim Jong-un," the North Korean leader who is expected to meet US President Donald Trump soon at a historic summit.

In the coming days, Trump will announce his position on the fate of the nuclear deal signed by the superpowers with Iran.
