The deployment of Russian troops in Syria near the Lebanese border this week has provoked a dispute with Iranian-backed militias, including Lebanese Hezbollah guerrillas, which opposed the uncoordinated move, two officials of the regional alliance supporting Damascus said.

A senior military official told Reuters that the situation was resolved on Tuesday when Syrian army soldiers took control of three sites deployed by the Russians near the town of Qusayr in the Homs area. It appeared to be a single incident in which Russia acted without coordination with Bashar's allies Assad supported by Iran, and Iranian and Russian support was decisive for Assad in the war.

Russia and Iranian-backed forces, such as Hezbollah, have cooperated together against armed opposition factions. Hezbollah fighters have been deployed in Syria in 2012, and the Russian air force arrived in Syria in 2015 to support Assad.

But the different agendas of the two sides in Syria have become clearer under Israel's pressure on Russia to ensure that Iran's military influence and its allies in Syria do not expand.
