    President Donald Trump has announced that he will invite North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to visit the United States if negotiations at their upcoming summit in Singapore go well. 

    But Trump added in a joint press conference with Japanese President Shinzo Abe after their meeting at the White House on Thursday that he was "fully prepared to leave the summit if things do not go well." 

    The president expressed his belief that the North Korean leader "is ready to do something great for his country, his family and himself." 

    President Trump stressed that "normalization of relations with North Korea is something I hope to do" once negotiations between the two countries have ended. "There are a lot of positive factors waiting for North Korea." 

    He praised the role played by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and South Korean President Moon Jayne in preparing for the Singapore summit, which he said would lead to "

    President Trump stressed that nuclear disarmament on the Korean Peninsula would lead to a "prosperous and peaceful future" for all Koreans. 

    Foreign Minister Mike Pompeo announced Thursday afternoon that he will travel to South Korea, Japan and China next week to brief leaders of these countries on the outcome of the Singapore summit. 

    "I hope that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will take a bold decision to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula," Pompeo told reporters from the White House. Asserting that Kim had personally told him that he was "ready for nuclear disarmament."
