A State Department official downplayed the importance of Iran's case against the United States in the International Court of Justice on the backdrop of Washington's withdrawal from the nuclear deal with Tehran.

"Although we can not comment on the minute details, Iran's case has no basis and we intend to strongly defend the United States before the International Court of Justice," the official told Reuters.

The International Court of Justice said Iran had filed a lawsuit against the United States, saying that the decision taken by Washington last May to impose sanctions after the withdrawal from the nuclear agreement is a violation of a treaty of friendship between the two countries in 1955.

The court is scheduled to hold hearings in the case In October.
