BEIJING (Reuters) - China's capital Beijing will shut down about 1,000 manufacturing companies by 2020 as part of a program to reduce smog and boost income in neighboring provinces, local media reported on Monday.
"Beijing will focus on bio-industries and high-tech industries, and will withdraw from the 'normal' industries," the Communist Party's daily People's Daily quoted a political document published by the local government as saying.
The newspaper said the city rejected applications for registration from 19,500 companies and closed or transferred 2,665 companies specializing in "regular" industries.
China launched a plan to improve coordination in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, which is prone to haze in 2014, amid fears that spree between the three judicial authorities would waste resources and create recession and pollution.
China plans to strip Beijing of industrialization and heavy industries, as well as relocate university headquarters and some government departments to the new industrial zone of Cheongan in Hebei Province, according to Reuters.
The government also wants to work on an integrated transport network and standardization in areas such as social services and education to make Hebei, known for its heavy industries, more attractive to investors.
Earlier this year, an official in the province of Hebei said the plan helped raise the average income in Hebei by 41 percent since 2013, although it is still only half of its level in Beijing.
